My Chinatown inspired garment is going to be shot at a fish market. The inspiration for my dress came from the newspaper wrapped fish in the markets all over Chinatown. Since 2002, China has been the world largest exporter of fish and fish products. In 2005, exports, including aquatic plants, were valued at US$7.7 billion, with Japan, the United States and the Republic of Korea as the main markets. In 2005, China was sixth largest importer of fish and fish products in the world, with imports totaling US$4.0 billion.
Therefor fish is a very large part of the Chinese community and that is why i chose the concept for my dress. I created a tight two piece dress that was visually similar to the wrapping and folding of the newspaper wrapped fish and shellfish. I then inserted the top of lobsters into the top piece of the dress. After that I inserted the lobster tails into the bottom of the dress in order to vitally mimic the packaging in Chinatown.
