Bridge 2: Clothing as Costume

How does the fashion industry today work to represent the gender fluid and gender nonconforming community? Since the 20th century, as feminists and activists fighting for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community prevailed, so has the questioning of gender roles. With gender roles being challenged, that led many designers and celebrities alike to put their own take on fashion without adding to the masculine and feminine dichotomy. Now, so many more genders are recognized, and rather than acknowledging them through fashion as androgynous, genderless, or unisex, we should reorient ourselves to embrace the entirety of the gender spectrum and every aspect of it. Holding a place along the gender spectrum, designers and celebrities that don’t identify as male or female have created a strong influence on defining their gender through clothing, whether it’s using silhouettes and garment forms usually associated with one end of the spectrum and manipulating it or creating new looks with unexpected patterns and forms.
