In this project, we were asked to design a new garment based on an existing garment.
First I started off from choosing an already made garment with sleeves and/or collar. Then I did a rub off to transfer the pattern of each piece. In the meantime, I also conducted some research into the style, silhouette and details of the existing garment.
Next, I collected some inspirational images, and used Photoshop and Illustrator to make an inspiration board, which set the theme of my design.
To follow a 3D-2D-3D process, I scanned my existing garment multiple times, and printed out the scanned images. Then I used those images as materials for my design ideation collages.
From 2D back to 3D, I made my first version muslin prototype.
To further develop my design, I did some draping explorations on this prototype.
Also, I experimented with some fabric manipulations on both muslin and fabric swatches.
Taking all the experiments into consideration, I came up with the final design sketch.
Based on the sketch and textile surface explorations, I made the second muslin prototype.
Then I further explored some details. Instead of using organza as trims, I decided to use it as the whole lining of the garment, and make it extend from the bottom. In this way, lining is cooperated into the design.
