Experience + Meaning

I am from Durango, Colorado.  A mountain town of 20,000 people located in the southwest corner of colorado.  I have visited New York frequently because it is where my mother was born and my grandparents still live here.  New York has been like a second home to me so coming to The New School seemed like a no brainer.  I had always walked past the abstract looking University Center always oohing and aahing at the geometric qualities of the building.  Attending TNS has been a dream of mine since the beginning of senior year and it has finally come true.

The Experience and Meaning activity that I attended was maybe a little different than the other sessions.  First of all, the orientation leader that I was assigned had not sent the email in mid august that the students were supposed to use in order to read the articles and find the room that we were meeting our orientation leader.  Somehow the majority of our group found the right classroom and met our leader.  Our leader told us that we would just discuss the articles rather than actually read them because none of us had the readings or worksheet.  After debriefing the articles we walked to Union Square where we walked around and then sat in a circle on the ground and talked about what we saw and what we heard.

This activity was not very meaningful for me because of how unorganized and unprepared the instructor was.  The Experience and Meaning activity could have been meaningful if it was better planned.  I would like to see what this activity would be like if it was better planned.

If I did this activity again I would want to go more in depth into the articles and go to a park that I haven’t spent much time in before.  I think this activity could teach you a lot about senses in the city but in my case did not have that effect.
