Body Hybrid

For this project I have to make a body hybrid in which two body parts are fused together to create an art piece. I made quite a few eerie 2D art pieces before, and I really wanted to expand my style to 3D art.  I was very inspired by Mark Prent’s sculptures that display very disturbing imagery with just the human forms. I thought that a body hybrid with the right parts and the right composition is able to create the same uncanny feeling. I thought that a metal themed art piece would work very well. After some consideration I decided to use my hand and my mouth. I was skeptical about putting alginate into my mouth, but after working up some courage I decided to mold the insides of my mouth as well. Furthermore, when I used plaster in the beginning I had never thought that it can be so intricate, catching even the tiniest details. This alone in a way made me change my original concept. I wanted to put a lot of emphasis on the paint which would be the main aesthetic focal point of the final piece. But I really wanted to keep the skin textures still visible so I decided to keep the paint job simple and as thin as possible. In the end I decided to use just 3 colours: black, bronze, and silver to create a weathered and oxidized metallic look. I also added an inconspicuous outline of the American flag, which requires a bit of scrutiny to realize. One reason is that a great part of metal’s creation and revolution takes part in the United States. Moreover, a lot of metal music critics America and I thought that the dark tone and black outline can represent that. This inspiration came from the song “America” by Motionless in White, and the style of my piece presents the theme of the song very well in my opinion. Overall, this is a very fun project and I really like how the art piece turned out.
