Space and Materiality, Final Project: Public Space: Mini Nature Gallery

This project is the final project of the semester. It is about designing a structure for a playground and their application tolarge scale sculptural pieces that function as public art and interactive play grounds fora particular group of people in a specific location.

My concept for this project is to create an open space on the lawn of central park in New York City. Central park is a landmark of New York City. There is always full of people when the weather is nice because it is the only huge green space for this concrete forest. People are gathering together under the tree shade and having picnic on the lawn. On the other hand, New York is also the centre of contemporary art in the world. It never lacks museums and galleries. However, they are all indoor spaces. I always wander when we can enjoy art and nature at the same time. Therefore, I want to design a mini gallery, which is constitute by four or five transparent layers, that combines the scenery of nature. The biggest reason I choose to make a transparent structure is that nature has its own color during different time. We can totally use the decoration from nature. The whole structure will be an irregular geometry shape in stead of a regular tetrahedron form which might give people a feeling of being isolated. I want to make people feel they are enjoy every art work in the real nature. People can walk around each layer of this gallery, which is like walking in a crystal house. The most inside layer is the show room. It will be surrounded by seasonal flowers and plants to make a interaction with outside would. This way, whenever people take a walk at the park or hang out with friends, they will have one more choice to spend their time.
