5Idea Sketches/Pattern Design

I prefer the triangle as a unit. I developed a few ideas a decided to work with forms that have a curved surface.

3-D Sketch Models

Stated with paper, I tried various arrangement and cut out different shapes to make a rotating view & form in triangle. With advise from Professor Kim, I decided to further develop the one (Paper Model 3) with cones overlapping each other.

I want some material that is soft to create a home and comfortable feeling for my space divider. However, the material should also be strong enough and stable for the construction. At the first I thought about fabric, gauze, but finally I chose to use foam sheet. My joining method worked towards minimalism. I used the push pins on front and back to push two pieces (or more) together.

One Unit

I added another plain material–wood sticks–into my design as the professor encourage us to challenge ourselves. At the Wood-shop in Making Center, I cut a stack of sticks at one time while using masking tape holding them together. Then I drill the tiny holes preparing for the joining. The foam sheets was pushed together to form a corn shape by two wood sticks. At each corner of the triangle, the wire went through the holes at end of sticks and tie them together. At last, push pins will mask the trace of wire, leaving the a clean look of the unit.

Jointing Units Together

The pieces are jointed together by thin metal pipes and wires inside.
