Bridge 2: Repurposing Garments

Intro to the Project

In Bridge 2, we discussed “How Lineage Affect Your Fashion/Design Aesthetics” in Seminar. At the same time, we re-purposed three garments to make a new garment relating to what we write in seminar.

Moodboard

My moodboard include two elements: exaggerated Lolita dresses and porcelains that inspired a blue and gold color theme. (The dress wore by model was a piece by Guo Pei in her “An amazing journey in a childhood dream” Collection.)

Base Garments

At the beginning, I wanted to make a dress that has blue as the theme color (according to my moodboard). But I couldn’t predict what base garments in thrift stores would inspire me. I finally go three dress that is more suitable for making something mainly in gold.

I grew up in China where the dress code of school is very strict, and the students are usually too busy to spend extra time shopping for pretty clothes that can only be worn during weekends. My fashion aesthetics were enlightened when I moved to Seattle, WA in 2016 where high schoolers do not wear uniform; I had more opportunity to explore fashion subcultures. I am fortunate enough to have parents who encourage me to experience different styles and to choose what I want to wear and present. Growing up in an open-minded environment where friends and family respect my passion towards Hanfu and Lolita, I took the bold, exaggerated elements from these styles that demonstrate girls’ yearning for beauty into my fashion aesthetic.

Research Note and Thumbnails

I took gathering, overlaying, laces, purfles from Lolita to the dress I designed. It’s exaggerated with cuteness.

Sketches

I made two designs. Although I spent more time on the first one, I liked the second one very much.

Final Piece

The Lolita dresses exaggerate the cuteness regardless of the age, it became a symbolic fashion style for being brave (and not ashamed for being cute). I consider everyone who dares to wear Lolita dresses among normal people on the street brave, because they are showing off their uniqueness and their yearning for beauty. I want to bring the unique and beautiful elements of these styles to my fashion design, encouraging every girl to be pretty, cute and brave.

*For all the look above the model wore a hoop skirt under the garment.
