Avatar Risograph Poster Design – Group Project

Project Intro

In this project, we need to work in a group and design posters for the activity we attended together. Each of us uses a different technique to make the poster. Our group went to the NYC Village Halloween Parade, and the poster’s genre that we choose is San Fransico Rock Poster.

Brainstorming And Research

The technique I chose was the digital collage. So I needed to search for the images that I want to use in the poster. The concept of my poster came from one of the shows in the Halloween parade. It had a lot of white skeleton robots inserted with green lights making the move, and there were ears, eyeballs, and noses suddenly appeared with the music. It was so good. I was amazed by it and i thought that was my favorite one that night. So I planned to use the elements in that show to make my poster. In the sketch, I made some color matches that I thought fit in the poster genre, and some elements that I want to use. After these, I researched and selected images.

Working in PS

I started to work in photoshop and tried to make the first edition of the poster. I spent a lot of time on this one because I wanted to decide some basic looks that are going to be the main expression of my poster, as well as finding the correct tools and ways to do that in photoshop. The color below is not the same in my photoshop, but I figure it out in the second version.

Then I added noses, eyeballs, and ears into the poster. I spent some time editing them. Below are how they originally look and how they look after I edited them.

In this step, I mainly focus on adjusting the position of these items to make the poster looks good. In this step, I figured out how to make the saved file keep the original color.

Then I add fonts to the poster. Bryan told our group that the fonts in those San Fransico Rock Posters are all handmade. Below is the example poster that we considered about the fonts from.

So our group decided to hand draw the fonts in our poster, which is a lot of work. In order to get nice work, I used the Wacom tablet to draw in photoshop, which is recommended by my group members, instead of drawing on the print-out poster and then scan. It was my first time to use the Wacom tablet and it took me over 4 hours to finish the fonts.

Group works

The unifying elements as a group are we use the same colors to do the risograph printing, the font style, and the size.

Printing

I met problems about the reservation and the machine when I did the risograph printing. My work has a lot of parts with several colors in them and that is tough to apply in risograph printing because it is hard to make a perfect overlapping image with several colors.

I tried different color combinations and below are what I got after two hours of attempt and adjustment.

purple, gold, and black

Reflection

1. My work looks better when it was printed in procolor. So maybe I should take the risograph printing as a huge factor into my consideration at the first place.

2. Solid, pure, big blocks of colors will be better on risograph printing.

3. Designing and drawing the fonts are fun but time-consuming.
