Space-Inhabited Space Project

Inhabited space project final work

I researched the buildings in southern China and the roof gave me inspiration for the rainwater collection system. The roof has an angle so that the rainwater could flow in one direction and then be collected. The rainwater collection system that has been integrated un into my project is on the roof. The rainwater will be collected on the roof and then be drained into the structure through the tubes. They will flow to the ground under the activity ground, be purified, and then stored there for watering the grass.

The function of my structure is experiencing the season spring. It is designed for people who live in areas like my hometown Nanjing where the spring is super short and they are eager to have moderate weather. In days that are super hot or cold, people in the neighborhood would love to hang out and spend time in such a warm, peaceful place.

About the interior space, the ground is cover with thick grass, people can lie on the grass and smell the fragrance of grass and soy. There are also sitting areas across the indoor space. People can sit there, bury their feet in the grass and do some relaxing things, like reading or chatting. The chairs are long, which is designed to encourage people to sit close, communicate with each other, or at least greet with each other.

About the exterior space, there are also sitting areas close to the structure, where walking people can take a rest and relaxed. The wooden space around the structure is for people to place their shoes. People place their shoes in the outer edge and then walk between the shoes and the glass wall to enter the structure. When they look at the transparent, reflective glass wall, they can see the inside of the building as well as themselves, imaging the cozy environment that they are going to experience.

I chose the texture of wood, grass, tile roof to integrate into my design. The functions are mentioned above. These elements are spring related and the tile roof has a traditional meaning. There are many traditional buildings in the city with tile roofs.

My structure is situated in an urban environment, like in a CBD area with a lot of tall buildings. I made a background board to indicate the surrounding physical environment. The structure aims to provide a relaxing space for people who busily work there. More importantly, it provides a space for people who don’t have an access to the CBD area. The CBD area is part of the city, don’t work or live nearby doesn’t mean that people can’t enjoy there. My structure provides a wonderful space in the busy area for whoever wants to stay.
