PS147 Reflection + Final Projects

1) How was the visit to PS147 for you? Did you enjoy the exchange with the fourth grade students, find it challenging etc.? Did meeting with the fourth grade students change your final project idea in any way? Any feedback on the experience or process that you would like to share?

Visiting PS147 was better than I thought. I was a bit afraid of getting along with kids at the first place, but I actually like it. I feel like primary students at their age have really open mind. Their brains are not only limited under certain boundaries, but their thought can go anywhere to connect with anything they are interested in. I think through meeting with these young people, I believe just focusing more on daily life, there are many things could be used as a final idea. I feel pretty happy about the field trip. It had been long time without talking to young people around these ages.

2) Explore articles published in the New York Times within the last month in the “Climate and Environment Section”

1 What was the most interesting visual that you found (photograph, diagram etc.) and why was it so powerful to you? Include the image and the link in your post.

There is a photograph with strong red fire. It visually brings me the feeling of hotness, and it feels that there are no living creatures could survive under this condition.

2 Given what you learned in this article, how different do you think the planet be 10 years from now?

The article is called A Forecast for a Warming World: Learn to live with Fire. The earth is going to have more pm2.5 in the air from the wild fire burning. Thus, it might cause the whole earth getting warmer and warmer. The animal species might reduce because some of them might die in the fire.

3 In what ways do you think these realities will impact your work and life 10 years from now?

There might be less area for buildings because the area around forest might easily burned by fire at some point. Once the fire starts, people living nearby needs to leave, so many people would not choose to live near the forests. Other places of buildings will be more popular, and the price of apartments might get higher. Because the weather could get warmer, the ice would melt faster and the sea level increase, which might “eat” some cities, which also cause less space for human.

4 How might your final project address, acknowledge and/or work with such climate related changes over the next 10 years?

The overuse of paper would need more trees and reduce the amount of forests more quickly. The fewer the forests are, the huger climate impact would affect the earth.

3) For next week you will need to narrow your final project idea down to one Long Life object or a Long Life practice. Before deciding in your final topic, imagine your potential project 10 years into the future (in 2029). Knowing what you do about the Anthropocene and climate change, what could make this project/practice still useful to you then? How can it support you /remain relevant through many life changes (does the design need to be flexible/adaptable)?  Consider this carefully before finalizing your idea. I strongly recommend using skills/interests related to your major for this project.

My new idea of final project is making baskets or plates by folding used papers from my earlier projects. We often need to test works through printing them out. Therefore, there are much paper used once and become useless immediately. In order to give new life for paper, I searched online about how people make second use of them, and I saw some beautiful paper crafts which triggers me to give a try. The original content in the paper could be treated as a texture to put into the new paper containers. By making these paper containers, it can actually replace the plastic containers and make the table more organized.

Even though paper seems to be easily broken, it can actually last 10 to 20 years as long as taking care of it. I would like to put them in a dry place with only dry objects put in them. When I make it, I would like to try to fold paper as close as I can, so it can be more stable and stronger. Although making paper containers cannot reduce the amount of produced paper from the origin, bring second value to the “useless” paper is actually a positive influence. It could reduce some people buy plastic containers but just using the paper containers. Because fewer people would buy the plastic container, the fewer it would be produced from factories. It could be the paper system influences other systems.
