Through Grace Paley’s short essay, the meaning of the invisible racial gate is emphasized. Paley’s approach on this topic goes back to the very fundamentals of humanity which enables many of us to question the social norms that are present in out current world. Being courageous enough, the protagonist sacrifices her privilege despite the what she’s been told by her privileged peers due to her own judgment that leads her to the fundamentals of humanity. This small thought presented in the essay is what struck me the most as I read it, the power and ability to trust our own instinct even when everyone influencing you tells you otherwise. The will to make a change for the betterment of others even when you already posses a privilege.
