Backs

“Imigongo” which directly means “backs” in English is a traditional design made of clay and cow dung. This feature made of geometrical shapes is from Rwanda where my parents are originally from and is commonly used in most houses. These pieces made in black and white, represented economic stability for women in a male dominated society, allowing them to prosper by their own means. Making these designs for new homes became a trend in the region, gave jobs to women and even allowed them to send their children to school and afford shelter.
