Enough Black and White? – Animation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daHYt8vSJ-s

This animation project was one of the most challenging yet interesting project I had done this semester. It began with us selecting a quote from any penguin classic novels and then forming an animation around it. My sentence was ‘There are white men enough to marry all the white women, and black men enough to marry all black women’ from the novel Lincoln Becomes A Republican. The tone of the animation inclines towards retro collage. It is mixed with a lot of play of black and white shadows and highlights combined with drawings. There are quite a few transformations with chess pieces like it turning into a ball and then personifying it. My mood board exhibits  some of these aspects.
These transformations are usually done in conjunction to transitions. The transitions are either perspective related or zoom in and zoom out or with other elements like curtains. I have tried to keep the theme of black and white constant while adding some effects to background. What I wanted to show with the main animation is like a negation to the sentence. Portraying a combination of black and white is against the fact that black can only be with black and likewise for white. Chessboard was the first striking object that came to my mind thinking about black and white.
For sounds, I used various tunes and random sounds that went along with the action that was happening. I tried experimenting with abstract sounds that were not obvious to the action but I wasn’t satisfied. I also modified the volume and trimmed parts to make it a good match. All in all with the constant editing and use of different tools, I could portray what I wanted to say.
