This Video Essay was based on the theme of body language and normal. It was a challenge to think of a concept for my video that wasn’t very clichéd. I realized that I should do something related to sleep and thoughts I get in my head while I’m asleep. I started off with some clips of me doing different random things. These thoughts or dreams went from something light to something more intense. My first thought was just me walking around and then me dancing and finally a scary part. After the critique I realized that my first thought didn’t have that dreamy, floaty feel so I changed it to a clip me looking around and kind of being lost. This fitted way better.
I edited the video on Adobe Premiere. When I shut my eyes, everything that I see is in black and white, that’s why I decided on putting the inverse filter. During the critique I was also given the idea of using sleep cycle which would fit the building intensities of my video clips. So I researched quite a bit about the 3 sleep cycles: Light Sleep, Deep Sleep and REM Sleep. Between each dream I added a normal clip of me sleeping in that certain stage and inserted text defining the stage. The text really made it a video essay and not just any video. The contrast between the inverse and normal filter and the font of the text made everything come together. The timing with the sounds also added that dreamy feel. Overall, it was very interesting to edit a video in such manner and I loved it at the end.
