Assignment #11- ‘Change what appeared to be fixed’

For this exercise, we had to observe and investigate the object/form/image we use daily and redesign them. We had to practice inquiry, investigation, and observation by asking questions and trying implementing the different solutions by a set of quick sketches and model making. Certain questions we could ask were:

What can I change in what appeared to be fixed in my items?

What if it worked like this, instead?

What if we tried it with this shape?

What if it were a photograph instead of a drawing?

What if it were made of wood or fabric?

What if it could be worn instead of carried?

I chose a toothbrush as my object:

Some of the modifications I thought of and questions I asked:

Here are the sketches that I created along with a 3D model (not exact):

I think this assignment really made me think about the advancements we could make with simple, daily objects that could solve so many problems. I would yet like to keep the curved shape of the real toothbrush because it reaches deeper in the edges of mouth. I couldn’t portray that in the model because that shape is difficult to achieve. The toothbrush would be made out of more flexible plastic because one should be able to squeeze it to get the toothpaste out. This would avoid the action of applying toothpaste on top and make it so much easier. The longer bristle head would also be automatic rotation for convenience and better cleaning. I also would put a timer with beeper because I think that’s one problem a lot of people have which is for how long should they brush or how long have they brushed for? I think this brush would be good for traveling and just daily use. There is so much design that we haven’t uncovered yet and I think by understanding the problems an individual faces we can modify the product. This process is really helpful to update and create the best for everyone.
