Assignment #15 – ‘Ergonomic Reflection’

This reflection is based off the video linked below:

This video talked about another part of design which is extremely important which is ergonomics. Ergonomics is the process of designing or arranging workplaces, products and systems so that they fit the function of the people who use them. It is necessary to get the work done but that shouldn’t be the only aspect, one needs to think about efficiency and design.

Ergonomics is not only related to technical things such as cars and chairs but can be used literally in every product to make function more effective. Ergonomics pertains to the design of anything that involves people; workspaces, sports and leisure. I believe that ergonomics is important specially because of the work-related injuries and illnesses that one develops due to bad designing which costs them much more. Health and safety are prime factors to discuss about in a workspace and when that becomes better, the productivity proportionately rises.

Ergonomics aims to take into consideration fit, comfort, handling, individual’s body size, strength, reach, speed, visibility, hearing, and even attitudes so that a space that is generalized can be used personally. I think something I believe that was thoughtful was the fact that they must reflect on the extreme data values in order to create for everyone and not just the general. While designing they study different disciplines such as anthropometry, biomechanics, environmental physics etc. However, it was surprising to know that psychology could be important as well to notice behaviors and tendencies.

The ideate design process can yet be applied to this. The designers need to observe and notice the population using a certain product in relation to age, gender, ethnic background. Then they get to redesign and make prototypes which would take into account user range, adjustability, specializing, packaging, costs, materials etc. If this further needs improvement, the process will repeat.

I think that the stools we use in our classes need serious ergonomic intervention. Not only do they have a hard, small circular base but they don’t even have a back rest for support. They should be made flexible for arms and back and easy to maneuver as well.

Something as simple as a pen could also require modifications because if you write continuously with it for quite a bit of time, it can cause pain in your fingers. Having it made more fitting and adapting to your fingers could be an option.

Even scissors could be transformed to an easier and adjustable design so one doesn’t need to use more strength for harder materials.
