Assignment #20- ‘Design Thinking – Ted Talk’

Tim Brown shares his ideologies and principles on how to apply business thinking in every aspect design and the other way around. He talks about how Brunel was technology oriented while working on the Great Western Railway, yet it was his designer instinct that led to all the layout and designing the entire path. Good designing takes a major step in when something doesn’t simply pertain to its functionality but creates an experience for the user.

I think something that I learned in my school while doing the IB curriculum was to think holistically. I stand by this principle because it is a much more efficient way of thinking of problem solving. A holistic and integrative approach not only tackles the problem from one angle but reaches for a multiple problem resolution. Additionally,  thinking divergently provides a new approach on problems and creates new choices and applications.

He also emphasizes on the 3 aspects which are necessary for any design to be workable and in use; Feasibility, Viability and Desirability.  I believe that design has been an integral part of every object we use or see and so encouraging people to be as involved as possible is simply a smarter move. The more people, the greater and better ideas and a large network of designers can only be good for the world.

Some of the key design principles are:

  • Make design human-centered because in the end everything is done manually. Let technology intervene but not overtake.
  • Build in order to think; prototyping speeds things up. The quicker the process of implementation, the faster you get a feedback to improve or modify.
  • Start movements; generate more ideas; push the flow of critical thinking.
  • Believe in giving meaningful, participative experience rather than focusing on mass consumption.
  • Collaborate and work in teams. This will not only decrease the fear of failure but increases trust and playfulness.
  • Don’t just design spaces, design every part of the work like agreements. Simple designs make it so much easier.
  • Ask a lot of questions but ask the right questions.

“In order to think about design thinking, design everything”.
