Kintsugi

Art as defined in the dictionary is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination” and hence I believe Gen Saratani’s work of repairing broken ceramic is definitely a form of art. While Japanese Kintsugi is only a method for repairing broken ceramics with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum, it provides for a new life of the item which makes it a beautiful art piece.

This definitely made me think about the functionality of a broken item. The broken ceramics pieces could be used for the purpose again if the owner wanted to and hence the functionality is intact. This kind of made me really realize how I could enhance my mirror’s beauty while not completely eliminating its purpose. However, the fact that there are precious metals involved in the Urushi could make it possible for the owners to now keep the pieces as ornamental or decorative pieces in their house. The repair could have also made them realize the fact that it is only their culture and traditions which have become richer.

I believe that repair is one of the best ways to give back to the environment on an individual scale. Repairing can not only be a way to get the product back to the original state but can also beautify and diversify it. I found it really interesting to know that some people possess damaged items because it is something that connects on a spiritual level and believe in the inner beauty of it. I think repair brings back nostalgia than throwing things away. I believe more people should lead this way of reproducing rather than manufacturing more. It’s one step closer to the ecosystem while keeping ancient wisdom alive.
