“The energy and space around a material are as important as the energy and space within.”
Proposal
The artist I chose for my inspiration of this project is Andy Goldsworthy, who took inspirations and materials only from nature for his creations. Employing the materials he obtained from nature depending merely on where he was, he created patterns that challenge people’s visual senses. In addition, time is a “material” or factor he considered as part of his works. As the tide rose, the branches floated away with the river; as the ice melted, the sculpture fell apart and disappeared under the sunlight. He would watch the whole process of his works changing along with the time. I chose this artist because I always believe that aesthetics are tightly connected with natures. My favorite fashion designer, Iris van Herpen, took all her inspirations from natures and created astonishing patterns for her couture collections. Therefore, to design an ensemble that costs patience and time and is originally inspired from natures, I drew inspirations from Andy Goldsworthy’s process in making his arts and took patterns he created onto the design of my ensembles.
Andy Goldsworthy
Andy Goldsworthy, who took nature as his studio to work in, granted himself with freedom to explore materiality in nature. “Ephemeral” is the adjective he used to label his artworks. Traveling from place to place, Goldsworthy had to understand diverse attributes of his surrounding environments in a short time and make arts around it, photographing right after the work is completed.
