Bridge 4_Project Prototype

First Prototype

The prototype was both successful and not working. It was successful because through the experiment with one double-sided see-through mirror and one silver mirror, I created the infinity mirror effect that works perfect with LED light strips. In order to create typography as I designed, the LED strips must be thin enough to be corner bended. This prototype failed because the strips are too thick and even after I tried cutting half thickness to bend from a small part, the strips still didn’t work. I learned from this prototype that being familiar with the chosen materials is important for better collaborating the materials with the needs for a project.

Second Prototype

The second prototype was more successful that that first one because I replace the thick LED strips with thin ones. By applying two ways of corner bending, I got to create a typography of “Game Over”, using the font that gives a feeling of video games. I experimented with RGB+warm white LED strips for the typography of “Game: and a separate RGB strips for typography of “Over”. However, the bending of the strips still looks not natural enough to clearly recognize the words. Besides, the LED strips are not flexible, so the inside wires can easily broken when bending, which makes the bulbs from a large portion go out as shown in Prototype 2_5. For final artwork, I would design a more natural way to create typography out of the corner bending and gently bending the strips to avoid bulbs going out.
