Proposal and Hat Character Study

Photograph 5 people wearing hats that you find interesting in one of the followings neighborhoods. You must talk to at least 2/5 of the people, and write down their answer, extra credit for speaking to all 5 people. Your subjects need to be people you observe on the street that you find interesting, not friends or people you already know.

I really enjoyed this project because it forced me to really observe the world around me. I noticed things I would not have noticed earlier. I kind of got carried away with the project and continued to photograph hats that I was quite fond of outside of the locations listed.

IMG_0507One of the first hats that I chose to photograph was very difficult to ignore. I mean it is a neon green thick beanie, how could you ignore it? Her whole outfit was very playful as it mixed many textures, colors, and styles. The hat perfectly brought together the whole outfit, without it I feel it would have been lacking.

The second hat was a friend of the Neon Green lady. Her hat and overall outfit greatly contrasted against her friends. She wore more monochromatic and muted colors where as her friend was more vibrant in her color choices. Yet her hat looked extremely luxurious and harmonized well with her navy blue coat.

A very typical hat to see on men, I was not at all surprised when he passed by with his dog as well. I love how the baseball cap has become a staple in many people’s wardrobes. How the man allows for all the attention to be drawn to his hat, due to the fact that it is the only color in his outfit.

It is a very rare occasion for me to see younger people wearing hats in this particular style. The man strolled on by with ease and elegance which I personally believed was accomplished by his cap. It’s very hard for people to pull off this hat with the ease that the man seemed to accomplish it in. IMG_0518

I loved how the woman matched her beret matched her coat. I have always loved berets, the story she shared with me only made me love her hat even more.

My First Interview:

Although this woman wore a very plain and simple hat I was drawn to it for its function. She was the only person that truly wore a hat for a significant purpose. The hat covered all her hair so as to keep her warm and to shield her hair from certain odors.

My Second Interview:

Few of the hats that I enjoyed and decided to just take a picture of for my own pleasure:
