Studio2: Bridge1:Taxonomy Collection

For this Learning Portfolio post, I will show a Taxonomy Collection I did base on my choice of theme– Gender. This is an overview of all the items that I collected. Thinking of my theme, I narrow my theme down to a topic that relates to females.

Taxonomy Collection (10 items)

Item 1

By thinking about the word female, reminds me of the most visually appealing appearance of a female is their hair. The stereotype of typical Asian female’s suppose to have black, long, straight hair. There is also another saying toward females with long hairs. According to time.com

So I choose hair as one of my items in my Taxonomy Collection for my theme— Gender.

The practical difficulties of long hair: “In order to have long hair you have to have your needs in life taken care of.” So long hair is also a status symbol, especially when it comes to complex hairstyles that require someone else to help you do them, which “implies you have the wealth to do it.”

Items 2,3,4,5
Nail Polish

Makeup Brush

Rubber Band

Measuring Tape

Items 2,3&4 are nail polish, makeup brush, the rubber band is all significant items that showing females identities which is very obvious. And item 5 is a measuring tape is used to measure female’s body shape. This is also very obvious in which women are being defined as skinny are beautiful. The measuring tape is a signifier in which women are using it to measure their body shape.

Item 6, 7,8
Woolen

Needle & Thread

Item 6&7 is woolen, Needle, and thread which are representing the items that would relate to females in which females are more likely to use these items.

Vacuum Cleaner Bag

Item 8 is a vacuum cleaner bag. I choose this item to represent females because this is what a housewife will need in order to finish their chores.

Item 9
Laces and Fabric

Item9 is Lace, dotted-fabric and lattice fabric. The reason that I choose lace is because the earliest history of lace are all about use for females. The reason that I choose dotted-fabric and lattice fabric is because these two red fabric reminds me of a picnic in a park. Which females are more likely to wanted to go to a picnic. And these patterns are often to see in the 1800s as housewife’s dress.

Item 10
Lolipop

Item 8 is a Lycee flavored Lolipop. According to research from ABC News, “females are more likely to yield to their sweet tooth than males.” I also wanted to use this item to signify the sweet taste of females.

Reversion of 3 items
This is the second part of my Material Taxonomy Collection. I chose three items, Hair, Vacuum Bag, and Measure Tape from the ten items of my Material Taxonomy Collection that I collected for my topic Gender. I will include photos of my sketches, working process, and the final results in this post.

Sketches

Vacuum Cleaner Bag(Makeup cleaner cotton, cotton swab, rubber band & pink thread)

Measuring Tape (Gummy Bear Candy)

Hair (woolen)

The recreation of the three items taught me different materials function differently. For example, when I try to sew the makeup cotton together to create the vacuum bag. The cotton is very fragile to sew. I have to control the amount of strength I use to pull the needle to not break the cotton. For the creation of the measuring tape. I had to create a mold to create a container to hold the melted candy. It is hard to control the shape of the candy when it is melted. And I also have to deal with the demolding process. For the creation of the Woolen hair is easy. Since the materials had similar qualities with real hair. My favorite part of this project is experimenting with different materials and also finding the materials that have meaning for my recreation of the items.

part 2 & 3: material and object as a metaphor, locate the material explorations where you most practiced being resilient. Where do you see resiliency happening in your project? In a different colored font, write about where you see you were practicing being resilient (explain what it looked like) and also locate where you feel you could have practiced being more resilient but did not.

I see resiliency happening during the process of me choosing the materials to create a reversion for my Taxonomy Collection. I can see the creativity of my choice of materials. Such as the candy bear that I decided to use as a material to recreate the measuring tape. And as well as the resourcefulness during the process of recreating the measuring tape using the candy bear.
