7.11 Intro Post

Hi! I’m Zachary, and I’m going to be a senior at Livingston High School in Livingston, NJ next year. I’ve taken two years of graphic design classes at my high school, one architecture class, one theater design class, and multiple business classes. My fields of interest include graphic design, marketing, and retail design. I’m on my school’s improv team. I’m vice-president of the Greenhouse Club and Co-President of our Model UN team. I am (strangely) interested in the supermarket and retail food industry and have extensively studied store design and operations, mostly on my own. In fact, I make it a point to visit — and shop at — a different supermarket every weekend, not a small task given that there are no fewer than 367 within a half-hour’s drive of my house! I write a blog about my travels, at njsupermarkets.blogspot.com.

The featured image for this post is a photo my grandmother actually took at the opening of her new local supermarket in July 2016. I think it’s one of the coolest photos I’ve ever seen of a supermarket — and my grandmother isn’t a particularly good photographer otherwise!

Selected Images

  1. Alice in Wonderland poster: Designed in my graphic design class for my high school’s fall production of Alice in Wonderland. Each student in the class designed a different poster, then the director, technical director, and two design teachers chose mine as the best. I personally like it because it is whimsical and evocative of motion, with a sense of fantasy.
  2. Aquí Market circular: After visiting Aquí Market, an independent ethnic supermarket chain with three locations, and being disappointed with their single-page, amateurish sales ad, I attempted my own version, which would also fit on a single 8.5×11 paper (as the current version does). NOTE: I did not design the Aquí logo.
  3. This logo, for a company created by a classmate in an entrepreneurship class, is one of my personal favorites because of the feeling of motion and excitement it creates. I designed the icon and text especially for this logo and could be used on this company’s other branding materials. It’s for a company that makes snowboarding equipment.
