Reflection on Grace Paley’s ‘Travelling’

I find Grace Paley’s ‘Travelling’ to be a very emotive and thought-provoking piece which offers insight into both the struggles and adversity felt in times of discrimination, but also the idea of a generational divide, bridged by the shared view on equality and empathy.

Paley’s status as a stranger in the community enables her to resist the injustices of segregation by allowing her to overtly notice the injustice and moral wrongdoings of the situation, which the people within that community gave become accustomed too. She, however, sticks to her own morals and strives to encourage others to reflect upon their mislead and prejudicial judgments on innocents (for example the baby).
