White can have the meaning of not only a color but everything. It is superior. It can be considered as a metaphor for simplicity, or minimalist that referring to complication. “There is a kind of white that repels everything that is inferior to it, and that is almost everything.”
Robert Ryman’s paintings are always whites, not white. “His whites are colors; his paintings do not involve or imply the suppression of color. His whites are empirical whites.” Because of that, we call this generalized white, not pure white.
University Center of The New School mainly utilizes the three colors that are white, red and gray to furnish the interior of the architectures. Red on the walls stays together with the logo of “THE NEW SCHOOL”, for example; the gray walls of a part of design in cafeteria, restrooms and restrooms, etc.; white used on walls in the corridors… As the passage saying, the simple color can also represent the colors other than itself. In my perspective, it may have the connection to the idea and notion of the The New School that emphasizes the innovation and creativity in arts.
