Is the audio interpreted through animation in a non-conventional or poetic way?
The animation interpreted the audio through metaphors, exaggerations, and symbology. The inspiration came from my favourite saying: “surrealism is a place where logic plays no role.” I wanted to create a set of non-logical transformations to represent our state of mind during solitude. For example, abstract shapes and colours represent the sounds and rhythms, creating a visual “dance” that captures the essence of the music in a non-literal way. I corporates multiple metaphors and symbolism to represent the themes and ideas in the interview, using visual imagery to enhance the emotional impact of the words. Specifically, I look at loneliness as a “rabbit hole”. The term “rabbit hole” typically refers to a metaphorical journey into the unknown or a series of events that lead to unexpected outcomes. When interpreted in the context of loneliness, it suggests that feeling alone can be a slippery slope that leads to more intense feelings of isolation and despair. Like Alice falling down the rabbit hole in Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland,” loneliness can feel like a sudden and unexpected descent into a strange and unfamiliar world. Once we begin to feel lonely, it is hard to pull ourselves out of the emotional hole we find ourselves in. Loneliness can lead to a negative spiral of thoughts and feelings that drags us to feel even more isolated and alone.
Does the animation add to or transform the audio in some way?
My animation transformed sound in a variety of ways. It helps to visualise different aspects of the interview, such as pitch, volume, and tone. For example, I use colour and shape to represent different pitches, making the audio more engaging and easier to understand. Second, the animation creates a specific mood or atmosphere that complements the audio. For example, I used dark and ominous colours and shapes to suggest a sense of tension or mystery, allowing audiences visually resonate with the feeling of loneliness. Light and bright colours create a sense of contrast. Third, it enhances the storytelling aspect of the audio, by visually representing characters, scenes, and events. This can make the audio more immersive and engaging that convey emotions and ideas more effectively. Overall, animation can be a powerful tool for enhancing and transforming audio, by adding visual interest, creating atmosphere, enhancing storytelling, and adding humour or entertainment value.
