Community

My community design serves as an extension of my previous assignment on the Body. Inspired by William Gibson’s notion that “the future is already here, it’s just not evenly distributed,” I’ve developed a concept that reflects the stark socioeconomic disparities prevalent in our world. Recognizing the inherent limitations of human will, space, and resources, I’ve divided the community into two distinct parts: the wealthy and the poor. This division reflects the reality that achieving absolute equality is unlikely given current societal structures.

Contrary to conventional utopian visions dominated by towering skyscrapers and urban sprawl, my research indicates a growing trend among the affluent towards rural living. Factors such as job insecurity, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation have driven wealthy individuals to seek solace in the countryside, prioritizing nature, space, privacy, and mental well-being. In contrast, the less fortunate are confined to cramped urban environments, subjected to noise, pollution, and overcrowding.

To challenge these stereotypes, my community design places affluent residents in separate homes at the heart of the community. This arrangement allows them to enjoy the conveniences and resources accessible from all sides while also immersing themselves in the natural surroundings. By integrating wealthier individuals into the fabric of the community rather than segregating them into exclusive enclaves, my design promotes a more inclusive and equitable living environment for all residents.

The shell’s primary purpose is to shield the animal’s soft body from predators, environmental hazards, and physical trauma. A round shell offers optimal coverage and defense against potential threats from all directions, forming a sturdy barrier capable of withstanding pressure and impacts. This structure helps safeguard the animal’s vulnerable internal organs.

In this context, I aim to highlight a futuristic scenario where the perpetual risks of natural disasters and diseases pose significant threats. Due to their limited resources and access to advanced technology and healthcare, the impoverished are often the first to fall victim to these events. They effectively serve as a protective barrier for the affluent, sacrificing their well-being until solutions are developed for the privileged few. This dynamic can be viewed as a satirical commentary on societal inequalities, wherein the poor inadvertently shield the rich from harm.

Final Presentation

In this utopia, freedom extends to every aspect of life, including how individuals choose to dress. Here, attire holds no significance, and societal judgments based on clothing are nonexistent. The absence of danger fosters a sense of security, allowing people to leisurely sit and dine wherever they please. Uniformity reigns in the architecture, with houses constructed identically and interconnected by narrow pathways, eliminating the need for transportation. The vast open spaces, enveloped by nature, provide ample room for living and exploration. At the heart of this idyllic community stands a glass ball building, serving as a central hub where residents converge and connect. Here, entertainment and amenities abound, with food and essential resources delivered to each household three days a week, while waste management is efficiently handled, ensuring a pristine environment for all to enjoy
