Bridge 1 Reflection

Class critique is one of my favorite parts of the art-making process. Because the value of my work is not inherent and is instead worth more to different people based on how much they perceive the work. In other words, different viewpoints contribute to a better understanding of my work.
The most inspiring feedback was Jemmy’s question about the hexagon pattern. Other classmates also mentioned how the shape reminds them of reptiles and honey bees. I find this feedback helpful because my original plan was to make some paper sculptures. However, I did not find a way to fully embrace the theme of parasitism and interrelation with 3D constructions. The honey bee’s nest is a perfect structure to present with 3D paper folding that creates interactions with the surroundings and viewers. Hence, if I had another week to work on my Bridge 1, I would cooperate 3D elements to make my work more interactive. For instance, I can fold pieces of connected hexagons and stick them on my body and the surrounding. This new approach not only allows the viewers to see, to feel but also to touch. In terms of illustration, I will add more detail to each of my obsessions, and perhaps create more interesting connections in between. Stick to the original piece, I would try to adjust the texture of the printed-out pattern and the materials used to make the “fake skin”. The Pro color printer paper created reflections when shooting, hence, looked less realistic in the photograph. I may use clay to put more detail in the texture.
Expect the improvements mentioned above, I am happy with the final presentation. The value of making art is to discover the many grey areas in life. Hence, I am proud of it not only because it depicted my struggle towards the relationship between me and my obsessions in a visually powerful way. It also accurately conveyed the message to my viewers as most of my intentions are mentioned by the classmates during the critique, it was exciting to see that my work helps me to express a feeling that I have nowhere to start if I asked to talk through it.
Although all my obsessions are unique, and I love each one of them, the most excited one to explore would be the environment. It is a magical and powerful word; not allows me to discover the beauty of the natural environment, but also the human environment —– the society that we live in.
