Post Entry about Community based project

“Design for social impact and social change.” When I see those words, I was interested by the alternative purpose of graphic design, because before I read this book, I hardly will ever associate graphic designs with community or any social problems. And my second reaction is admiration and respect, because when you have the chance to be hired by large corporations and advertising firms, it is not easy to step back, and devote yourself to working closely with unfounded communities that have social problems need to be solved by design to some extent.

I really love the first project “CareS Mobile Satety Center.” It is a community based project located in Baltimore City, Maryland. 2009. The CareS Moblie Satefy Center is a colourful vehicle that parks outside different places that are most connected to the daily lives of parents and children, such as schools, medical clinics, health fairs, etc. The interactive vehicle’s purpose is to educate parents about fundamental safety information on how to prevent injuries in home. Actually, the idea of a movable safety education center was created by John Hopkins Center for Injury Research& Policy, and it was functional in the local community. So this is a project of redesigning a mobile health bus to reach a bilingual audience. ( both English and Spanish speaking audiences.)

I love this project because of its interactivity by using a movable vehicle and basic graphics instead of excess words, and its thoughtfulness in terms of caring and fulfilling the need of Spanish speaking audiences. I also like the approach that they use, “immersing into the community”. I feel the project successfully conveys the essence of graphic design, which I believe is to communicate with less effort for the audience. But I also think that it is clearly not only about graphic designers. I believe designers in all fields working together will create more beautiful and functional habitats for all.

  1. Your description of the journey from ideation to implementation was both insightful and motivating. It’s amazing how small ideas can blossom into significant community contributions, and your storytelling captured that essence perfectly.
