For my studio final, we had the entire semester to come up and plan this. Our topic was based off of something that we had the burning desire to explore, something we may not be as comfortable with, and something that really drives us. For me, video and film are rather foreign subjects, so I decided to take that on. That in mind, the three topics I was exploring throughout this film was: people, oceans, and writing. The thesis I came up with was trying to embody whole idea that we are all connected, especially back to nature. The ocean is my personal root to nature. I’ve lived on the sea my entire life in my little Ocean State, i’ve observed it from both up close and far away for years, and i’ve watched it. I used this topic along with people to film a series of shots at the beach, using a white sheet to mimic a fluid-like movement, as well has had my actress wear a white dress that would also fly in the wind, especially as she ran. I then had her do a series of movement shots, jumping, running, walking, grinding her feet in the sand, and so forth. Just really basic human body movements. I made sure to get the lapping of the waves, and showing her and the water collide together. I really wanted to use simple sound in this as well, things that would transport somebody back to their roots and relax for a little while. The writing took place as my piece, in which I went to the beach and wrote for a few hours to create it.
I also experimented with various projection methods, using different materials to project my video on to give it a totally different and disconnected affect.
