Compared to other scientists, Nobel Laureates and National Academy members are disproportionately involved in art. Why? Artistic and scientific inquiry has been intertwined for centuries. Every artistic endeavor starts with a research question, and the same is true for scientific experiments. Today, professional scientists actively seek out collaboration with artists. What do they hope to learn from each other? In this talk, I would focus on a brief history of artistic influence on and prevalence of artists-in-residence programs in three scientific fields: ecology and evolution, space exploration, and industrial engineering. After this talk, your students would understand how a single research question could result in both a piece of artwork as well as a scientific discovery.

Tina Amirtha is a freelance feature writer, based in Amsterdam. Her writing revolves around science and technology in the global marketplace and more specifically: (bio-)hardware, the intersection of art and science and technology, scientific research, health, and information preservation. Before Ms. Amirtha’s life as a writer, she spent five years working in software development and product management, which took her across Western and Eastern Europe, as well as Asia. She has a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from TU Delft (Delft, The Netherlands), and a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois).

Ms. Amirtha is originally from Chicago and splits her time between there and the Netherlands, where she lives with her husband and baby son.
