PHASE III / CREATIVE TECHNIQUE

FOLDING EXPLORATION:

I began experimenting with origami to come up with the basic form for this project. I used the beginning folds from the octahedron (inverted folds and valley folds) to create a small triangular shaped box/clutch. I thought this would be the perfect shape for my bag as it could also work as a backpack, and the two rectangular sides could fold down to create a flat tabletop. After finalizing this form in origami paper, I moved on to draw sketches of what the final accessory would look like.

STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS:

These sketches illustrate that the backpack will have the same form as the origami model, with an added flap and button for closure as well as straps to allow the user to wear it as a backpack.

PAPER PROTOTYPE AND PROCESS:

I used a large paper to create an origami model that was closer to scale of the actual accessory. This paper model allowed me to play around with the form and figure out the most ideal way to have the bag convert into a table. I found that my initial idea of having the two rectangular sides drop down to create a flat surface would not be the best option because I would still have to figure out a way to attach legs for the table inside the bag while still maintaining a sleek look and ample storage within. I found by flipping the bag upside down the bottom of the bag could create a nice tabletop surface while the sides could serve as legs, I would just have to attach triangular fabric panels within to prevent the sides from opening completely.

CRUDE PROTOTYPE MADE TO SCALE:

This prototype is made of butter-board and muslin, for a sturdy effect. However, the final accessory will be made from hardboard, leather for the straps and flap, and a cotton lining. I will use hinges to attach the panels together, the fabric and leather will be attached to the wood using staples and wood glue. It acts as picnic bag that converts into a table and is meant primarily for beverages. It can perfectly fit the average sized wine bottle along with 2 glasses. It then collapses into a triangular shaped purse/backpack, utilizing the same base folds and inverted folds as the octahedron. I placed the straps as a purse on the prototype but on the final it will be a backpack.
