For the last project, we were assigned a remake. We could choose any artist we wanted, from the renaissance to the ones exhibited in contemporary art museums, we were given a very wide range of options. Our group (Me, Caroline, Deborah and Erik), picked Haris Lithos, a Greek contemporary artist with very little information about himself on the world wide web.
Haris Lithos became famous, or perhaps noticed, on the internet because of his “shocking” butt imprints. Haris made several of the with different models and colours. From the only interview provided on the internet, Lithos states himself as a feminist and that is surprising if you consider what his work looks like. However, that is where his concept comes in, in a private interview he told our group
“[…]A true feminist will love and celebrate the female body.”.
What drove us to choose Haris was the paradox in between his ideals and his work, plus we thought it could be something really fun and it was very different from other groups’ project so we decided to stick with it.
Below there are some of Haris works.
In 2005, Lithos created a series of works called “Flag Series”, some of which he shared on his personal account on Instagram. Once we were aware of this series, we decide to take this same approach for the remake but with our own flags. Our group is very diverse, we are people from all over, and we decided that it would be more interesting to add ourselves into the project than just remaking it. Besides the subtle change of the different flags and backgrounds, we followed Haris works by heart. We painted ourselves and each of us imprinted their own flag into their own canvas.
Here’s a timelapse video of how we did the remake and at the end there’s a brief part showing the final result. Each of us did 6 imprints on our own bed sheets, so at the end we could select each side we would want to show as a final piece.
After producing the final pieces the only missing part was the display, we decided to staple our bed sheets on the wall in a Lithos kind of style, one butt imprint above the other. Obviously is not 100% even, but I think it could not be more accurate than that.
