I have never done any weaving before, and so far I consider finding a way to put my individual pieces together the most difficult part of the whole process. The images below reflect my progress during the past 3 weeks of Space/Materiality class.
Idea I
To create this system was not an easy task, I initially wanted to incorporate the shape of a ribcage, turning the stripes and shortening them in the top. However it was not working, so I decided to forget the ribcage and develop something else from that departing point.
The system is divided into A’s and B’s and with a structure in the middle binding both sides together, also in the middle I cut diagonal rectangles so the thin stripes could pass through and incorporate a shape. On the firs two pictures I did not use glue or tape to make them hold together, in most parts, the system worked fine without any additives.
Idea 2
The second system is more developed than the first one. It is composed of rings and strips, the black rings were made by simply cutting the paper into thin strips and then rolling them on my finger, then the long strips were individually cut, 1cm width, then passed through the ring
In Week 2, most of the time in class I focused on this particular piece. I tried to incorporate different shapes and play with it, but the paper I was using was not thick enough to develop anything I wanted, the shapes would quickly change because the paper was to thin.
Using a thick paper I was able to create forms that would last more than 5 seconds. At the end of the day I had come up with the object on the images below. I plan to fill the lines until the top with other rings, creating some sort of “tunnel”.
