Advanced Research Seminar reflection

I am Gillian, I am an artist and educator. I have worked a lot in childcare settings and taught lower school students and plan on continuing to do more of that after I graduate. I am interested in many different forms of art such as oil painting, animation, printmaking and digital design. I don’t have the most specific body of work as I like to experiment with different mediums to find new challenges and things to learn. I have worked a lot with painting and trained in traditional art, but am currently learning more new media arts at school.

A lot of my recent work has been semi autobiographical. In school I have felt like I need to put everything into my work. I am really inspired by spaces, dreams, and exploring the meanings and real life trauma behind nightmare spaces. I have always been interested in surreal interpretations of life, it does not necessarily have to be meaningful to everyone, however the art I portray that I am passionate about is based on my own thoughts and experiences.

I was interested in studying more about the Japanese art movement Yami Kawaii. I have been interested in anime for a long time and this specific movement combines cute anime characters or costumes with darker themes like gore, violence, and mental health themes. It plays off of lolita and pastel rainbow styles of fashion, which were brought into the mainstream as a way to reclaim femininity. Combining ideas of idealized cuteness, violence, dream states and mental health and is mainly consumed by young women.

My thesis “This has to mean something, right?” is a game inspired by more old school Japanese role playing computer games. It explores these darker themes through different dream states and deals with my own traumatic experiences and thoughts. I believe knowing more about a Japanese movement that effectively portrays what I have tried to with my thesis would be incredibly interesting to me.

Narrative Scroll

Page 3- they astral project into the exhibit

Page 4- they befriend the bears, still in human form, the bears are interested in them

Page 5- they become a bear, their human body is on the outside thinking.

My mom and I go on a trip to the zoo. I ran around with excitement, seeing all of the animals I could never see in nature.

While visiting the zoo, I was drawn into one of the exhibits, I pressed my face against the glass, jealous of the friendships they seemed to have. My mom yelled at me to pull back, as to not draw attention to myself because inside there are big scary bears. But I am not scared of them, they could kill me but that’s ok, their power is beautiful. Mom is saying something to me in the distance, but I am not paying attention. I see the bears notice me, they look at me with kindness not malice.

I gaze into the enclosure and my mind begins to leave my body. I am welcomed in with warm paws. I can slightly feel the dirt in the inclosure and the smell of fish. My body still stands outside the display. The bears start to gather around me, confused and investigating. They are unsure if they can trust the essence in front of them, however I instill full trust in them. They start to gather around investigating. They communicate with each other to decide their next.

They surround me.

Growling to themselves. I look down at my spiritual form, I am becoming a bear, my hands begin to build up fur, my legs shift into bear stubs. My joints shift and turn, but its ok. I found a community, they look at me again, and agree to accept me. I look around at the enclosure, there are little hills and a little lake. This would not be a terrible place for a kid to live. There would be food provided, and I would be safe and play all day. I growl along with my friends, crawling around the space. Outside the enclosure, there is a body of someone standing, deep in thought. I look at the glass and do not know from where I’m standing which side is the cage.

Narrative Scroll Research

  1. One example of Narrative scrolls is infographics. They tell a story and share information and are read vertically. This infograph explains what an infographic is. It is created for the website easel.com.

2) Another example of Narrative scroll is Korean and American Webcomics and Webtoons. Instead of being formatted as pages, each chapter is presented vertically, it is made for being scrolled down on the web instead of flipped through like a book. They include color illustrations and follow a narrative story (typically romance) that the viewer can scroll through. I went on Webtoon.com to find examples, on this website artists post their comics and are able to profit off of them. This piece I put is from Lore Olympus by Rachel Smyth

3) Tumblr and pinterest posts. Both of these social media support the long image format while other social media platforms do not support longer images and require images to fit within certain size constraints. A specific post on Tumblr became a viral meme and was a narrative scroll, It was extremely long and would inconvience the viewer.

it would go on and then at the end of the gradient there would be a joke,

For my project, I am creating a story about a young girl visiting the zoo, she falls inlove with the bears. She astral projects into the display and transforms into a bear.

Studio Semester 2 proposal

Gillian Bolnick

I think next semester I would like to create a world of characters out of clay and found materials. I would like to create a detailed story and descriptions for the characters and their interactions. I will create a physical world for them. I will have the story established and then add on as time goes along every week with new characters or pieces of the story. I will make the figures out of polymer clay, found materials, yarn, felt and pom poms. I will use cardboard and more for their land, the project will be an installation. They will live in a fantasy world, some will be monsters and some will be peaceful forest folk. I will also create little structures for them to live in, like little fairy houses. I think through this project, I will be able to experiment as well as learn new techniques on how to create. Discover the world as it is built.

Time goals- 7 weeks, each week create characters, 2d and 3d and descriptions and relationships while adding gradually to the environment. 2 a week

Description for characters before creation.

Gillian Bolnick Toys Final

For my final I did the paper mache mask show in demo B. I used a wig head to build the mask off of, and modge podge and newsprint to paper mache. The process was frustrating because I had trouble keeping the form, and having elements stick down. I stuffed the mask with plastic bags and bubble wrap to keep the form when I built it. It was a process that required patience for every piece to dry.

Here is the mask being built from the tin foil and the process of it being newsprinted and glued.

Here are the final results, including the mask wearing my wig to make it appear more human.

Reaction Toys

Toys are something I have an extremely personal connection with, more so than the average adult. I have more knowledge of the market than most because I spent months working at toy stores, learning and perfecting the craft. I paid close attention to brands and designs that sell. Gender plays a huge role into it, bigger than we think about. Working at a toy store while coming to terms with my gender was extremely interesting, I felt a sense of pride in the push for change, but the traditional roles were still there. The first store I worked at pushed for feminist items, like Feminist baby, and encoraged unisex play more. However, there were items like pretend play mops and a pretend play laundry kit (it never sold) that enforced gender roles so extremely. Any child should chose playing with dragons over playing with a mop. Parents buy these items to force their children into narrow boxes. It was infuriating, that kids cannot just be kids, and alot of the fundemental elements of toys for girls were training them to be wives and mothers. Someone would ask me “Can you show me toys for girls?” and I would show baby dolls, for toddlers to practice being a mother. Certain toys are not made to provide joy or nurture creativity but to uphold the patriachy. I was in a place where I realized my own childhood ended, marked by an event that haunted me.

I find comfort in stuffed animals, I try and surround myself with them now. I feel like they are toys made for the purpose of pleasure rather than to uphold the patriachy and are for everyone regardless of gender and age. Being at a toy store and helping children be happy is a very important goal for myself. Most of my life I have wanted to be a teacher, I think I still do but I am unsure.

For my toy project, I will do the second demo which was the paper mache project. I will make a paper mache head, following the demo and paint around it.

here is me starting to build it with the tin foil.

on the face I would like to deconstruct gender and the gender roles seen, and things I have heard.

Materiality Project

For my Materiality project, I made a stuffed animal. I used purple felt, embrodiery floss, stuffing and left over plastic from a box from Ikea.

For my sketch, I wanted to create a creature with bows and a simple face. I brought the elements into the final, but the shape of it changed. I was going to give it clothes and make it more anthromorphic and humaniod. Instead in the final project, I did not give it long joints and a human shape, but went a more cutsey route.

I put the plastic in it, which created a unique feeling and texture, I thought this would be a good way to reuse materials that are bad for the environment. This makes it feel kind of like a dog toy, and have a bit of a sqeak to it. I made a bow with red felt and I embrodied the eyes into the fabric before combining pieces.

The final result

Reaction- Mask and Materialities

The lecture showed the rich cultural histories of masks and their uses around the world. Masks can be used as many things within society, as fashion, education, entertainment, and cultural gear. Mask has now become an everyday word, previously left out of our daily dialogue, its now a word that is one of the most prevelent in society now. A mask traditionally covers the face, and every day we now have to physically wear masks. These masks have become so important that they have been personalized, people can see us and recognize unique characteristics from the masks we wear. The facemasks we wear around our mouths are very similar to traditional masks in that they are also a form of self expression. While many wear the more disposable blue masks many people wear unique cloth masks.

It is very interesting how integrated masks have become in our every day life.

For the project, I based what I am creating based on the lectures in Studio and my own personal interests. I have been wanting to get more into soft sculpture and embrodiery and am excited to work on a project with those medias. I am going to create a stuffed animal that is not necessarily childish, but strong in character. I have used the materials before and like sewing. I think back to the uncanny valley lecture and how it discussed how non human characters are more successful and less creepy. I think with my last project, the downfall was leaning more towards realism.

Here is my sketch for my character and a sample of the fabric bows they wear.

Puppetry and Sculpture Assignment

F0r my final, I used polymer clay to sculpt a face and then acrylic paint to go over it and yarn for the characters hair. I had not combined all of these materials before this project. My goal for this project was 3 dimensional portraiture in clay following the first demo. Working with this clay was interesting because I had to feel out the facial structures physically to create the piece. I  experimented with materiality for this project and feel confident in the resulting abilities I have gained from it. I used reference from my own face from initial sketches and studies I did of pictures of myself but because of how the hair is with the yarn, it no longer reflects my apearance.

Reaction- Puppetry and Sculpture

For this project, I think I will make a head using the reference from my own, I will build upon that and exaggerate my features. I have had my roommate take pictures of myself to reference. I look at myself in the mirror everyday and have no idea what I look like. I have changed my hair 14 times since being quarantined. I feel like the most distinguishable thing about me is my hair. I literally cannot sit and draw a self portrait of my face without reference anymore. I spend hours staring at the mirror, having crisises over who is looking at me. My self esteem is not only my appearance, when I think I look ok, I still feel self loathing. I used to exclusively paint self portraits and draw myself because I am my most consistent model. Every time it would look different but still embody some of me, in different ways. Even when I draw other people, I can’t escape my own appearance resemblance showing through.

did some observational drawings based on my face from pictures my roommate took. I know selfies can be bias.

I will combine demos A and B for this process, using clay and newspaper and found materials to make a sculpture on how I view myself.
