Bridge 2: NYC Past/Present

For this project we had to choose a site in New York and then compare its change over the years. Herald Square was the site I chose and to show the past vs the present I decided to create some kind of 3D  picture using different layers  with drawings from the modern Herald Square that mach perfectly the details on  vintage picture of the site. Carefully I chose depending on were the drawings were located the layer they were going to be in so that when someone would look at the work it would have a 3d feeling as if they were looking at the image using 3d glasses. All the drawings are inspired from different modern pictures I found.

Complications and Challenges:

There where many complications and challenges with this project. The major one was to find the right type of acetate that would work with the printer I have at home. The first time I bought acetate it was the wrong type because it was sticky on one side, just like a sticker. Then I went ahead and  got regular acetate but the ink would move very easily. The good thing about it was the texture it gave to the layer.

I ended up using regular acetate. I had to come up with a new way to prevent each layer from touching. My idea first idea was to create a box that would hold each layer vertically but when I tried holding the acetate vertically it would curve because it was too thin, so instead I did a horizontal structure.

Another challenge was perspective. The vintage picture was taken from the top and it is very hard to find pictures taken at that same angle, all the pictures I took and found on the internet were from bottom to top so I had to spend some time manipulating Illustrator to get the exact shapes I wanted.
