Sleepwalking Visual Narrative

My visual narrative focuses on functional alcoholics, and how time passes differently for them. We go through the motions of every day life and often don’t think about the fact that these people exist and we may even encounter them sometimes. I created a day in the life of someone who, just like many others, is simply going through the motions- eating, working, taking the subway- and trying to maintain a life while being controlled by addiction.

Concept

My visual narrative is based on the idea of how some people sleepwalk while awake. My soundscape describes alcoholism as being like sleepwalking; you are physically present but it’s like you’re asleep, and you are just going through the motions. I wanted to portray this idea in my visual narrative, by following a main character, who is an alcoholic, through their day. I want to show a unique take on this problem by showing, through their own eyes, how a person tries to maintain a life- a job, friends, family, etc- while being controlled by addiction. I was also thinking as a visual element, to have the video footage slowly become distorted and blurry, indicating how the character sees the world as they get gradually more drunk throughout the day. I think it would be interesting to portray being drunk in very normal, everyday places where a person shouldn’t be drunk. Not all alcoholics sit at home or on the street drinking, many go to work, school, and many other places and interact with people, so I wanted to show how drinking alters these peoples lives, and ultimately how it sometimes makes them feel disconnected from reality.
