Topic Map

I had to do some research on Buddhism when making my topic map. I looked into traditional Buddhist clothing and learned that the garment monks wear is called a Kasaya, and differs from region to region. I also learned different aspects of symbolism in Buddhism; many colors, patterns, and animal motifs hold significance, and are chosen carefully when incorporated into clothing and art. I also got a better idea of what is valued in Buddhist culture. I chose the specific subtopics within the Buddhism topic based on what I found to be important in Buddhism. There is a lot of ceremonial attire that is very specific and meaningful, and quite different when compared to the Kasaya. The Kasaya, however, is the most traditional Buddhist attire, and should be talked about because it is worn by practicing monks. Both ceremonious clothing and every day clothing should be discussed in order to fully understand every aspect of Buddhism. Symbolism plays a huge part in both subtopics, as every part of both garment is thoughtfully considered, such as color and pattern. To relate Buddhism with fashion, I chose to explore fashion in both Eastern and Western cultures, and how they’re different. I also included a subtopic discussing appropriation, because it’s extremely common in the fashion industry to appropriate other culture’s traditions into garments. This is important because Buddhism is not completely understood by designers who use aspects of it in their clothes, and this becomes a negative portrayal of Eastern culture. I still have a lot to learn about Buddhism altogether, and a few questions I have relate to how Asian cultures react to famous fashion designers incorporating their traditions into a seemingly materialistic and shallow outlet. I’m sure there are many different opinions, but they should all be explored, because no one’s opinion is more relevant than those whose culture is being used.
