For my final project I decided to reuse the iron board covers. These covers were going to be thrown out because they were stained and slightly burnt, however they were still very resistant.
I decided to use the covers to create my own textile, by sewing squares of the cut-up boards, creating a type of patchwork.
Life Cycles of my materials:
Iron Board Covers:
The material of the covers is cotton.
Cotton comes from plants, then the cotton is washed and cleaned. The cotton is then broken down, converting it into thread, the threads are gather creating textile in this case canvas. Then the canvas is distributed to textile stores, where people can purchase it. This canvas was then used to create iron board that fulfilled their purpose until they stained, then I gathered them and created my tote bag.
I used cotton thread to sew my bag.
The first parts of the process are quite similar, except the thread isn’t turned into textile.
Denim Pockets.
I found the denim pockets in the recycling bin
But these pockets have the same lifecycle as the canvas, they’re made out of cotton and then dyed, to create the denim color. Then they were assembled to make jeans. Which I later found the pockets cutout and inside a recycling bin.
All of the materials I used are natural, which makes it easier to dispose or reuse. The bag can be unstitched and then used for multi-use cloth.
