What is fashion?
I remember at the beginning of the semester I defined fashion as subject that is influenced by other factors in human society, defining what becomes popular.
Throughout this course I’ve gotten to understand into depth the true meaning of fashion and all the aspects that involve with it. For example, I really enjoyed the week when we talked about subcultures, because it was truly amusing to see what today fashion has leaped off of to create new collections inspired by many subcultures from the past. It also came to my attention in our discussion group how fashion has also done miss use and wrong research to create collection inspired off of specific subcultures.
“Part of dressing or fashioning the body is a kind of ritual experience or personal conditioning that occurs in everyday life.” (Kaiser 2012, 92)
I also enjoyed one of our first week discussions, intersectionalities. It made me aware of all the factors that create my day to day dress, where before I didn’t really give it a thought. It impressive all the factors and self tabus we set on us to determine what we can or cannot wear.
I thought that fashion and celebrity culture is a huge subject today, because of how fashion is being represented, where celebrities get the chance to “design” collections for big brands, which in the end this collections turn out to be quite popular among the customers…
It’s kind of ironic that now-days in fashion “anyone” specially someone who’s well-known among society, can become a designer and create a collection. It also comes to my attention the hype certain garments receive due to who is wearing it, although this garments can be tasteless and boring, just having the logo blowed-up all over the piece.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this lecture because it made me more aware and conscious of all the factors fashion carries along with it.
