3 Research Question

  • What is the mid-point of tailoring and designing? How do they differ from one another and what are some of the features they might share?
  • How did tailoring influence the men’s daily outfits throughout history, and vice versa?
  • How did modern tailoring system begin, and how is menswear market going to change after the era of tailoring?

Thesis Statement

Tailoring is described by the history as fashion that contains the theme of classic masculinity. To elaborate, if tailoring is ultimately emphasizing masculinity within the theme of classics, fashion design could be described as appropriating the most advanced and unique taste of aesthetics into a form of wearable. Although some differences exist between the two, they both contain an element that seams each other. This merging is jointed by the favorable privilege of appealing one’s identity within a garment. Tailoring’s contribution to the fashion world is often undervalued, but this theory is proven by the history; for example, Alexander McQueen who is known for his distinguishable and influential style, initially worked at a bespoke tailoring shop before branding himself as a designer. As this example, it is rather a fact than a theory to emphasize that most fashion designers earned their inspirations in suits that are and were in trend, and in contrast, men who earned their inspiration in fashion shows often changed the trend of tailored suits. From this perspective, the middle ground between tailoring and fashion has a tendency of getting mixed. It is still a debatable question of what standards are to be followed to differentiate tailoring and fashion design, and, or should we just let them be blended.
