Cooper Hewitt inspiration:
-The first thing that caught my eye at the Cooper Hewitt was the “Winter dress 2013” it is not part of the permanent collection. It was designed by Sandra Backlund by organic cotton. For my building unit, my material is felt, however this organic cotton kind of has the same texture. So i thought i would look closely to see the way this dress is assembled. She uses the material to emphasize the shape of the human body. She put it together by knitting the different pieces together.
– The next thing that caught my attention of the Tapestry designed by Kustaa Saksi, it is made of jacquard wavered mohair and rubber. Saksi used specific patterns to invoke the memory he has from Kouvola, Finland. He shows very beautiful weaving techniques. Saksi uses rubber, acrylic, lurex, and phosphorescent yarn with mohair and cashmere wool to complete his tapestries. I was inspired by this piece as it is opening my eyes to the idea of weaving different materials together, and help me see different ways i can assemble my unit.
-This piece is a book designed by Tauba Auerbach and published by Printed Matter, Inc. The 6 die-cut paper sculptures in this book are based on geometric forms, including the pyramid, the Möbius strip, and this ziggurat. I was really influenced by this piece because i think the geometric shapes are beautiful. I thought if i could stack my unit in different angles this is a good image for inspiration because it also shows the way the blocks are standing on their own without needing any extra materials to assemble it. The way Auerbach cut the paper allowed the piece to stand on its own.
