So here is the place I rent to live, the Financial District in Downtown Manhattan. I just went downstairs for buying some water. I saw this weird TV sat on the post. It is such a vintage TV to see, let along in front of a bank headquarter on wall street. I guess it might belong to some street artists? really, I don’t know.
Really, Financial district is a just a peaceful neighborhood, not so bustling as midtown and not too many shops as Soho. People here are considered boring and dull, since most of them are businessman. However, There are certain groups of people belong different areas of this district. So, I will explain it along with photos through the semester. Hopefully I will get some nice shots.

I used a 20-year-old compact camera for this shot. It is the cheap type of film camera that mostly for non-professional people or family use. I guess before digital cameras were widely spreaded, every family got one complex camara. The point I’m trying to make, is today, people believe in those fancy equipments to much, yet losing their own unique perspectives in photography. I even heard someone called herself is a photographer, but she doesn’t know how to develop films. Personally I use film cameras as hobby, because I love to be amazed by those unexpected coincidences when I got the final photos developed. Like this one, I saw the train was coming, then just took my camera with one hand and completed the shot. I didn’t expected the fog on the head of the train and the reflecting colors above the train. So as a extra, this is my 6th photo of the week. Still, I have no idea about where to settle for filming the same scene every week. I will refine the photos I have now and update with new ones by next week.

So cold yet so excited for dog-walking. Most people who settled in downtown, specifically around wall street, are bechelors and young students. There is a bigger chance to see pets here. I wanted to keep a cat, but everytime I just give up because of different reasons. Any way, Most people seen in downtown are businessman and tourists. Everyday, they come with the same suits and cameras, and leave in hurry. Everyday, they wear the same and act the same. Only a few residents settle here and only a fun left here. Seeing people walking their dogs on street is a great fun. The owners play the dogs’ voice and talk to a owner, so that they are acting a pet chatting scene.

There are many contemporary benches like this in the Peter Minuit Plaza by South Ferry Station. Then I did a small research about this called “Zipper Bench”.
“The new skateboard-proof benches begin as two benches facing opposite directions that ultimately zip-up and merge into one surface”- <10 unique Benches in New York City>.
“WXY’s Zipper Bench was officially unveiled, together with UN Studio’s New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion, at Battery Park, New York City on May 12, 2011.”-

It’s very rare to see guns except seeing with police. I saw this guy holding a shotgun walked into the South Ferry Station. Unusual.

A pink elepant on a half opened truck. I was on my way home after a morning class, then I saw this weird scene on wall street. If this was in mid-town or soho, it wouldn’t be so akward, but this is wall street, everything suppose to be boring. As the oldest part of New York, FiDi doesn’t show off much comtemporary arts. This kind of close mind applies to clothing style as well in FiDi. By the way, I read some reference reports that thousands tons of gold are stored under the head of Wall street. That is the place where has a blocked area beyond a security check point .

The project called “cityrack” was led by the city government, for encouraging people riding bikes instead of driving. The racks in most other places are just a loop, but only this one here, is a dollar sign. Just because it’s the Financial District.Later I found this official site:”http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/pr2008/pr08_031.shtml”. There are a few more exclusively designed bike racks in the city, they are shaped differently according to the places. For example, the one on the Fifth and 57th is a high-heel, and the one i Bedford Brooklyn is a Guitar to recall hipster. The city planners seem want to pleasure the tourists.

I always love to be outside take a walk or jog, as long as the weather is fine. I walked outside with my friend around 10pm on Wednesday night. I actually got lost after crossing this overpass due to the construction closures. Inexplicably I entered a closed office building, simply because that’s the other end of the overpass, and someone guided me there.
-
-
Then I entered a mall, I couldn’t figure out if it’s WTC mall or the other one. Anyway, the installation inside is very cool. 5 or 6 spinning “Dresses” are placed over head. I also wondered don’t they close the mall overnight?

After across a underground path from the mall, I still not reaching the path station. I’m not sure where is this, under the giant wings maybe. I know I’m not the only one who passed here, but it’s just a adventure since me and my friend were the only two there. others are workers and securities, and there were no sign anywhere.

This is the last image of the five this week. We walked towards the end of that white hall way under the wings, and there was a door led us here. As we walked through, we got to the path station and finally knew where we were.

This saxophonist played here in front of 55 Wall St every weekend except for chilling winter. He chooses to stand inside a little bit and put the box outer on the pavement for collecting money. The music is really loud but impressive, I can here that from 1 blocks away in my apartment.

This is amazing, a wall that full of etched words. I don’t know is this a purposed art or just people did randomly. This temporary wall is in front of a office building plaza.

The weathers’s been nicer. A perfect day for having ice-cream! I really hate winters in New York, but summer has other problems, like bad smells all over streets and in subway, roaches and bug might show up. Anyway, a day has sunshine is always good.

Modern Number Plate. This week I focus on building number plates. I found every building here has put effort on designing the fonts and the plates. Some number plates looks really classic and using old-style font. The buildings in mid-town are using more modern and simple fonts for number plates.

Huge Rat on Wall Street. I often see this kind of rat on wall street, and sometimes it’s yellow and sometimes is black. I did a quick research, and found this is for protesting. “nflatable rats, or union rats, are commonly used in the United States by protesting or striking trade unions against their employers or against nonunion contractors, serving as a sign of opposition and to call public attention to companies employing nonunion labor.” -from Wikipedia

Technically this is not a picture from the my neighborhood, but it’s a overview of the area from outside. I was on the circle line cruise. I guess many people would agree this: Manhattan is more fascinating when you view it from outside. At least I agree, from the point of viewing. The inner city is fascinating people by other ways. I read a line from a book, and I think it fits any major cities in the world, it says:” this is not a city, it’s world.” The bustling city is wonderful, and small lovely moments happen all the time.
