Description of Project:
This assignment was to create a zine based on the social/political issues in a movie. The movie I chose was “Ex Machina”. When watching the movie, we had to take note of the social/political issues between the people and thus pretend we were in that world. Then, from said viewpoint, we had to take a stance of the debate and create a zine based on the stance.
Notes and research on the chosen film:
The film “Ex Machina” has many socio-political issues within it, varying from how women were treated, to racial depictions of certain characters. I decided to focus on how the extremely intelligent and wealthy character Nathan, treated others who were “beneath” him in terms of economic standing and in “humanity”. Thus, my zine worked on that form of relationship between the two groups.
Notes and research on the real world issue that parallels chosen issue in the film:
This is and always has been a real world issue in the sense that throughout history, there are many examples of people who use their wealth to solely benefit themselves, and even disregard the welfare of others to gain those benefits.
