Archive Reflection

I really enjoyed going to the SVA archives. Already a fan of Glaser and Edelmann’s works, it was insightful to see original copies of their famous designs. One particular image that stood out was Edelmann’s traced work for Pushpin Inc. As an illustrator, I’d like to implement his techniques in my own work. His use of the extremely successful (although tedious) method of taping the blocked shapes of an image and using a marker overlay is something I’d like to try. My plan is to go back and research how the more psychedelic line drawings were created and reproduced to look so digital and clean.

I also recognized a common color scheme within the Pushpin Inc. universe that caught my attention. The use of color in line drawings is always something that takes a lot of time for me to decide, and I think getting a closer look at the colors chosen in previous works will help me understand what looks right. The colors in those original images were so saturated and even, its hard to imagine that the works were created with just paints and tapes. I’d like to examine more of the works we explored today and research how this uniformity is achieved so I can use it in my own works instead of having to rely on digital platforms for a polished look.
