IS2 BRIDGE 5

  1. What learning/ learning topic or learning process did you find yourself using throughout the semester?

Oh, well, this class was really helpful in terms of archiving my work and how to write, and RESEARCH! So, I found myself doing a lot of critical thinking, reading, and trying to understand and debunk lexicons. Also, managing my time.. which was the most difficult this semester.

  1. Where did you use it (in life, in class, in other classes)?

I mean, now I need to archive and photograph and reference other artists I am inspired  by. As a disorganized person, this method was very painful for me, turning me against myself- for the better. In other classes I found myself categorizing my inspirations and ideas.

  1. What learning did you make about systems or strategies (in society, in making, in research, etc.) do you want to bring into your future semesters, dig into deeper, or explore with other people?

Well, I learned… I have a lot of pride and am very stubborn, and I need to strategize more. With exploring in other people, it was very inspirational seeing how organized and committed Macushla and Carrie are- especially in terms of researching. This semester was excruciating- I had a lot going on outside of school this semester- and I failed to strategize my time, sleep, and energy.  There are many systems I drift in and out of, and co exist with others in. Macushla introduced me to some amazing concepts and amazing writers. Also really good advice for how to write and navigate academia. Within my future semesters- in terms of creating I need to cite and record everything.

  1. What is one ah-ha that you had? What did you learn?

I need to work better with deadlines and take school more seriously. Time, management. I was often thinking, I am going to do freelance- and yes it is still true, but I need to manage my time better- and the first step is really the most difficult one. I have learned how I learn- and how I work. There is a lot of room for improvement, but it is a process, and while it may be a slow process, I am on my way, and I have my own system- but my system doesn’t always work- especially within guidelines. I never want to listen, and while I don’t have to, I want to to gain a wider skillset.

  1. Select two highlights from your first year. These highlights might consist of major projects or papers. A highlight could also be a productive class debate, a journal entry, a materials experiment, an illuminating course trip, or a new skill. This is a deep look at your work.
    1. Planning: Show your preparatory steps for both highlights. What initiated these? How did you plan for the different steps? How would you prepare differently next time?  ***** The group project from the end of the first semester- the paper world dystopia. Drawing, and reading was a major inspiration- although it came about from just talking with my peers- shooting ideas back and forth. This is really where my inspiration comes from aside from reading, and films. Talking with others. We made cards, but it really came from just doing it, getting the room covered in newspaper and shooting.  The one failure was, I felt like I was lacking support from one of our members- which has happened very often in group projects. Although, I guess sometimes I should just expect this and have had a better outline for how I wanted to shoot the narrative. Choosing collaborators on a project is also something I need to think critically about.
      1. Outcome: Show what was explored/ made/ written/ researched. Write a clear description of each item. Add media components (images, galleries, video, excerpts, etc.).
      2.

A.These are some photos from our project. All three of the actresses and the set, made of Chinese newspaper. The planning for this was kind of poorly done. We pasted the room in paper, shot the same day, and were in that room maybe 11 hours straight. I was researching the qualities of newspaper and what it meant metaphorically, literally- what newspapers consist of contextually and substantially- how they are written- and how people communicate in contemporary society.

B. second highlight would have to be the process documentation for bridge project one. It took me forever to submit, although I really love the short video I made, and I want to continue to experiment with shooting strange scenario. The video came after the photos. It was kind of a groundbreaking moment for me. Often I find myself extremely frustrated when making art- a mental blockage-and It is so difficult for me to produce something, when I made the video, I kind of gave up working on this perfect scenario I had in my head, and just begun to have fun, and then I made one of my favorite videos so far.

2. Bridge 2

  • Thinking: Show your thought process. What do these two highlights represent? Why are they important to your learning? What is most successful or interesting about this work?

A. My thought process is mainly personal, thoughts in my head with scattered notes. It helps me get down my ideas, but what has changed in first semester and last semester, is second semester I was forced in various classes to do process documentation- which I have never done- and It was very hard to get motivated- even though it is extremely simple. Yet, the work is stunning, and it came out better than expected

B. For the process documenting 2, I was was trying to visualize my ideas in my head, without sketching them- and that is part of the reason why it took me so long to submit the actual pieces- because it was difficult for me to visualize them!! It didn’t line up in my head which kept me from moving forward- because I spent so long thinking. SO this was kind of an ah-ha moment to loosen up and just have fun- although my painting teacher and I later in the semester had a lengthy conversation about anxiety and art- and chasing anxiety..

  1. If you could tell future students anything from what you learned during this year, what would it be? (Not just in this class – but overall in life about first year at college.)

Well, It is a lot of work, and you may find yourself questioning it a lot. It is a different experience, and school- I tried very hard to make the projects my artwork- which was excruciating- school is to develop technique- and there is no shame in completing the assignment even if it doesn’t meet personal standards. It’s a lot of work though…

  1. Write a conclusion that looks toward future interests, questions, and courses. This is where you’re heading.
    1. What new questions do you want to pursue in the future?                                  Abstraction, how to make an astute, compelling, solid performance and video- developing concepts and what I really want to say with whatever piece I am making. How can I stop being so self conscious about my work, improve my line, and how and when will I ever learn to manage my time
      1. How might one project generate another?                                                     Ideas branch off and can flower into another thing, SHOOTING IDEAS BACK AND FORTH WITH SOMEONE, or just being as ridiculous as possible
        1. What new skills/techniques do you want to learn?

I want to explore sound, video distortion, and creating more performance based works- but selectively curating the movements and actions. I want to know- What exactly is improvisation, and how to successfully improvise without being sloppy. I want to learn animation and how to work with the green screen. I WANT.. to expand my skill set as much as I can to be a better multidisciplinary, well rounded artist!!
