When I saw the fountain in the south end of Madison Square Park, I noticed that it was just taking up space. It was not running, it was low to the ground, and it was ignored. I thought of making a fountain that people could enjoy and experience. First I decided to make the fountain have different levels. You could walk on or sit on. Next, I decided to continue to push the piece by adding a reflective pool within the water. I would achieve this by adding mirrors and submerging them. Lastly, to push the piece a little but further, I decided to place colored lights in the water to shine through when someone stepped on a certain area of the fountain–making it interactive. I got my last idea from the artists I used as inspiration. The artists I used are children’s book illustrators so the idea of playfulness and colored lights fit.
