Intro to Fashion Studies: Rec #4

Posted in Intro to Fashion Studies: Rec, and Year 2

For this assignment, I had a chance to check out the Black Fashion Designers exhibition at The Museum at FIT. The garments there were really gorgeous and beautiful. This exhibition explores a few generations of African American and African fashion designers from the era of the 1950’s till now. Black designers were always hard to be recognized and underrepresented. This exhibition provides us a chance to face those challenges directly, as well as their tough experiences overtimes.

In the image showed above, the garment was designed by Duro Oluwu. According to my research, Duro Oluwu had international success arises from a strong visual cross-cultural aesthetic, high quality of the cut and the fabric, and an appreciation for the female form. His taste of contemporary Africa that shows on his fabulous garment matches the theme of this Black Designers’ exhibition completely. He well-used bricolage, mixing bright colors, prints, and forms of textures.

Duro Oluwu presents his aesthetic by using these techniques, which gives the audience a great impact and also strong influences a lot of people.  It is a guide that leads the audience to see how black designers have existed and found success in a multitude of ways and styles. This is how the designer made contributes to the fashion industry. Other than that, back to the exhibition, when I was walking around in that area, I gained more than what I could learn from the garments, there were also a lot of other ways of an exhibit. There were also magazines and photos. I really appreciated that there were more than one way to learn and enjoy a fresh aesthetic.
