Project 3: Lined dress

For the final project, we had to make a lined dress or jacket with a choice of inflection. I had some trouble coming up with an idea of what to do, and what I wanted to focus on. I decided to make a lined dress and focus on materiality. My dress design was inspired by my favorite attraction at Walt Disney World, The Enchanted Tiki Room, where there are a lot of tropical birds and flowers that sing. For the skirt, I got a blue stripped fabric, and design a lining for the bottom with parrots, Toucans, and birds of paradise. I used fabric painted to create the print. I also added a thick gathered red belt, and a plain white top. The top and skirt are cotton, and the belt is satin. The dress also has a gathered cap sleeve.

I first made the patterns for my dress top and skirt. I painted the pattern on the skirt after the cut out the fabric, and I sewed it together what I was finished

Lining the part was challenging, and I had to do it over a couple of times, but I’m happy with how it turned out. The top lining is white cotton, and the skirt is red lining. My dress does not have facing because the fabric was too thin.  I am very happy with my fabric choices, and I think the colors go really well together. I hope in the future, I can use fabric paint more, because it really makes the dress one of a kind.
